How to Make Tanning Oil at Home: Quick Recipe Guide

July 9, 2021 by Sheena Leave a Comment

Did you know that there are a lot of benefits to making your own tanning oil? It is easy and inexpensive to do. You may be wondering how much time it takes, how many ingredients you need, or how difficult the process is.

If so, this blog post will answer all of those questions for you! I’ll also give some tips on how to make certain types of oils with different benefits. So read on if you want more information about how to make tanning oil at home!

What ingredients needed to make the tanning oil?

  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Vitamin E capsules (high potency)
  • Epsom salt bath or sea salts in a container that seals tight and contains no hole for humidity to escape. Air is the enemy of your oils!

You can also use any combination of these ingredients: Jojoba, Grapeseed, almond, avocado, grape seed oils. You’ll need about half an ounce per batch which should be enough for four applications at least. A single vitamin E capsule will double how often you can apply it without going through each application too quickly as well.

Mixing different types together like jojoba with coconut makes them last even longer because they have a tendency to go rancid from oxidation over time.

Let’s start the DIY process and make some cool tanning oil for home use!

Buy a bottle of olive oil

Olive is the main ingredient in most oils and is also how you know how much oil to put in the bottle. The amount of olive oil that will be needed varies per person, but a good rule for beginners is about one ounce or 30 ml per body part.

So if you are making a whole-body tanning lotion, then you would need five ounces or 150 ml (one cup) of olive oil.

If it’s just your face then half an ounce or 15ml should suffice (about two tablespoons).

It might seem like this makes more than what you need at first glance; however, once mixed with other ingredients there will not be enough room left in the packaging which means some mixers won’t fit inside! That being said, make sure to measure how much oil you need before filling the bottle.

Mixing other ingredients with olive oil

Put the olive oil in a glass jar or pot and heat it on the stove until it’s warm and liquid.

Add in the other ingredients and mix well until they are all dissolved, this will take a while depending on how many you’re adding so be patient and keep stirring it up every now and again.

Either use it as the base for your tanning product or carry on with these steps to make lotion, oil, etc.

However much of each ingredient is needed depends on how big you want it to be but just think about how long-lasting you need it to be because some things like cocoa butter can increase how solidified something becomes! If not using right away then store at room temperature out of direct sunlight.

Use within 18 months after opening/making otherwise discards; if making small batches I would only do one batch at a time.

Mix in your favorite essential oils (lavender, coconut, peppermint) to make it smell good

To give your tanning oil a lovely smell, mix in your favorite essential oils! You can also use a variety of different carrier oils to achieve the right consistency; coconut, jojoba, sweet almond are all great options.

For an extra luxurious feel, you may want to include cocoa butter into this mixture – it has strong moisturizing properties and is easy to find at most grocery stores or health food stores

Don’t forget how sun-kissed you’ll look with these quick tips on how to make tanning oil at home! This formula will work for both lotions as well as oil so get creative and have fun mixing up new formulations!

You can also add in some essential oils like lavender and peppermint to make it smell lovely!

Pour into small bottles with droppers for easy use

After doing the DIY, you can store this into different small bottles with droppers for easy use. Small bottles with droppers are so handy and easy to use, and they are also very inexpensive to buy.

Apply by rubbing onto skin and then applying sunscreen over top

To apply the homemade tanning oil, just rub it all over your skin and then apply sunscreen over top. This will ensure that you get a natural-looking tan without the harmful UV radiation!

Use an old t-shirt or rag to apply lotion onto your skin

Use an old t-shirt or rag to apply lotion onto your skin. This will ensure that the tanning oil does not get transferred from hands and fingers to other surfaces, like clothes or furniture.

This DIY how-to would be a great gift for anyone who is looking for ways to make their skin have a natural glow without spending loads of money!

Wait 15 minutes before going outside

You should wait at least 15 minutes after applying the tanning oil onto your skin as you need to let it absorb into the skin and dry.

Best to apply before bedtime or in the morning, as your tan will be shown at its fullest potential after you wake up!

Planning how long to go on vacation? One of the most important things that people often forget about when booking their vacations is how much fun they’ll need for their desired color.

If you’re going somewhere with less sunlight than what you normally get, then make sure to stop by your local drug store beforehand and grab some pre-made self-tanners so that any time spent outside can give you an even more natural glow.

Keep out of reach of children – do not ingest!

Always keep the ingredients out of children so that they cannot ingest them. If you ingest these ingredients, they can be very dangerous and harmful to your health.

Be sure not to put this moisturizer on sensitive skin or the face! Sometimes people with sensitive skin will find that products made for tanning are too harsh for their delicate skin type.

If you have sensitive skin, it is best to build up a natural tan before using a product like this because products designed for tanning often contain harsher chemicals that could irritate your delicate skin.

To avoid breaking out in hives after applying these oils, try keeping some of the homemade recipes at home just in case! Never apply any sunless tanners while taking certain medications as it may lead to vitamin D overdose.
